EXERCISES

Exercise 1: Quantify & Visualize Data
For the first exercise, we are going to quantify our chosen items and arrange the objects into a presentable layout or chart. I used coins for this exercise.

I arranged them on mahjong paper and wrote on the mahjong paper with a black and blue marker pen.

And here is the table that included the data of the coins.

Here is the final outcome of exercise 1:

Exercise 2: L.A.T.C.H (Location / Alphabet / Time / Category / Hierarchy)
For Exercise 2, we are going to organize a group of information into a visual poster that combined and utilizes the LATCH principles.

I chose the compiled data of Pokemon which was suggested for this exercise and I'm using Adobe Illustrator for this exercise.

I chose these four types for my exercise:

Fig 1.9, Water (10/1/2022)

Then, I started to have some ideas in my mind and I remembered a game that I used to play when I was little, it is called "GROW island". So I was thinking to make it into a Pokemon Island.

Here are some of my sketches:

Then, I decided to work with sketch 3 and started to digitize it using Adobe Illustrator. Here are some of the processes:

And I'm deciding which is better for the poster:

FLIP CLASS

FLIP Topic 1 (Different types of infographics & online tools)

Different types of infographics
We are tasked to do research on different types of infographics and record our presentation as a video.

Group brainstorming on Miro board:

Fig 2.1, Different types of infographics- Group 5 (8/1/2022)

Here are our group's slides on different types of infographics.

Online Tools - Redesign Infographics
We are tasked to pick one free online infographic tool and re-design one poorly constructed infographic poster through our own experimentation with the selected tool. Then rate and review the online tool we used.

Fig 2.4, Chosen poorly constructed infographic poster (7/1/2022)

Reasons that I chose it as a poorly constructed poster:
  1. Unrelated background (wood pattern)
  2. Looks messy (lots of information)
  3. The different images dazzled the audience (bottom part)

I used Canva as my online tool for redesigning the poster.

Fig 2.5, Canva (8/1/2022)

I used a green template to match the theme "Vegan vs Vegetarian", I remained the information from the original poster. I also added some related graphics to the poster.
Fig 2.6, Canva (9/1/2022)

Here is my first attempt, Miss Anis said it looks ok and straightforward but try to match the types of graphic elements like matching the honey jar to the others with black borders.

Fig 2.7, First attempt (9/1/2022)

Since I can't find a similar type of honey jar, I changed it to a milk carton with a similar black border instead. And I adjusted some of the positions and added the websites that are supposed to be at the bottom like the original poster.

Here's the result:

Rating and review of the online tool - Canva:

Difficulty & Intuitiveness - 4
I think overall it is an easy online tool to use even if I'm new to it. It took me about 25 minutes to 35 minutes to actually understand and learn to use it.

Usefulness - 5
Canva provides lots of different types of designing choices like cards, posters, and even presentations slides. I think it is useful since there are lots to choose from according to different requirements or situations.

Design templates & Choices - 4
It has lots of simple and interesting design templates, but most of them are "Canva Pro" which means you need to pay to get more stunning design templates, graphic elements, fonts, etc. However, the choices are varied and attractive.

Others:
For the zoom in and out function, it is quite frustrating as I'm using Canva on Ipad, and when I wanted to zoom in, I used to zoom in using my two fingers to zoom in, but it only zooms in when I used the tool is given at the bottom.

We are tasked to present an explanation on the topic (Miller's Law - Chunking) as a group.

Here are our slides and our presentation video:

FEEDBACK

Redesigned Infographic:
Looks clean and straightforward, try to match the graphic elements to look more integrated.

FLIP class - Miller's Law (Chunking):
Interacted with the audience through the presentation, the presentation is lively and well-explained chunking.

REFLECTION

For the L.A.T.C.H poster, I learned the most is brainstorming because it really needs to be creative and think about how can I express the information that I wanted to include in the poster.

And for FLIP class, redesigning the poster is not that hard, but I can't find any bad infographics examples so it is quite frustrating in the beginning. But I think it turned out ok and I think I would use Canva for other works like presentations, making cards, and posters. For group presentations, I think we worked well together and our leader Jia Yee assigned our works evenly and fairly. And the two presentations turned out pretty well!
