Sketches
These are my sketches at first, the text I have chosen is " Be good, Do good, Follow the code".
Fig 2.5, sketches (27/9/2021)

I chose 3 from 6 of them to continue the following process — the digital progression, to see whether is it look fine and worked well.

Digital Progression
I use the 3 layouts that I chose and I used them in Indesign for this exercise.

FEEDBACK
Week 6 (1/10/2021)
General feedback: Body text should have same line lengths, the shape of the layout should be not too complex.
Specific feedback: Make sure to achieve cross alignment.

Week 7 ( 8/10/2021)
Specific feedback: Mr. Vinod gave feedback to my submission and he thought that for Fig 2.9, line length is good but the idea for Fig 2.11 is better, try to combine the two in one for better submission.

REFLECTION

Experience : For task 2, I think it is quite difficult since I use Adobe Indesign for the first time. There is still a lot for me to discover besides watching lecture videos. It might be difficult for me but it is interesting to learn working on a text.

Observation : Doing a sketch before start doing it is very helpful, it helps me clearly know what layout I'm going for and can try sketching different layout for more options.

Finding : While doing Task 2, I spend quite a lot of time figuring out which layout should I use because I found out that my ideas are not so strong as others. So I chose the first layout which has a stronger idea than my other layout.

Character and word spacing
Kerning

Inter-character spacing, known as kerning.

  • Creates a more pleasing look to the text
  • Certain letter combinations may require manual adjustments (lowercase/ uppercase letters)

Fig 3.2, Kerning (Pg 12)

The adjustment of word spacing is called Tracking.

  • The main purpose is to make the type fit a required space without altering the type size or line spacing.
  • It can be negative, making the words closer together.
  • It can be positive, making the words farther apart.
  • An important use of tracking is to fix a single word at the end of a paragraph.

Paragraph alignment

  • Alignment refers to the side of the page or column with which the text is even.
  • Most body text is either flush left or justified.
  • Headlines and subheads are normally flush left or centered.
  • Forced justified is rarely used
  • Flush right should only be used for design purpose
