LECTURES
Week 5 ( 23/9/2021) - Visual Techniques : Chiaroscuro
What is Chiaroscuro ?
"Chiaro"- Bright
"Scuro"- Dark
- Chiaroscuro refers to the use of light and dark to create the illusion of  three-dimensional volume on a flat surface.

Why Chiaroscuro is used ?
An artistic lighting choice to :
  1. Increase dramatic tension
  2. Create sensational effect
  3. Pull your attention to a subject in an intense way
  4. Create a tasteful composition of negative vs positive spaces

Other Chiaroscuro usage : Contrast (Form, value practice)

Visual Techniques : Composition 3
Having rhythm in art is one of the most difficult aspect to achieve.
Basic visual elements to create movement - shapes and lines.

INSTRUCTIONS

Task 2 - Decisive Moment

  • Minimalist poster [800 x 600 pix or vice versa]
  • Animated minimalist poster [800 x 600 pix or vice versa]

EXERCISES
Sketches
Before I decide on the movie for this task, I have several movies in my head like Big Hero 6, Raya, Onward, and Toy Story. But in the end, I remembered this movie that I watched not long ago.
I wanted to create a poster from the movie " Over The Moon", it is a movie about a girl called Fei Fei who builds a rocket to the moon on a mission to prove the existence of a legendary moon goddess.

This is the scene where Fei Fei built a rocket and set off to the moon. I drew two kinds of rockets in my sketches, the rabbit is actually paper wrapping the actual rocket in the movie.

So I'm wondering which should I draw, in the end, I think that if I draw the actual rocket would be confused with other movies that are related to rocket, so I decided to draw the bunny rocket which more represents the movie. Here are some of my sketches:

This is the sketch that I want to go for, but switch the rocket to the bunny rocket, and the movie's logo I'm not decided where to put it yet, so I will try it out when I did it in Adobe Illustrator.

Digitization
This is my first attempt, I traced the bunny and the design on it, but when I worked halfway, I think that the sky is too simple so I searched on youtube to make a better sky here.

Then I watched a video to make the sky like a galaxy, it looks nicer than my first attempt. But after a while, I think that this galaxy sky is quite complicated and in the movie there is no galaxy sky like this when Fei Fei set off to the moon, so I tried another one.

Fig 2.8, Second attempt (7/10/2021)

My third attempt turned out pretty well, the sky is darker than my second attempt, and the stars look smaller and natural than my first and second attempt. Then, I continue my work.

This is the video that I refer to make the night sky.

Then I added the logline, some colored lines to represent the sparks when Fei Fei turn on a turbo thing in the rocket, and some clouds to make it looks more like a sky. I'm trying different positions to place these things here (it might be a little blurry but just to try out the positions):

I decided to use the third attempt, then I added more details to it by adding some bigger stars, shadows to the logline and the movie logo.

Fig 2.14, Final outcome (15/10/2021)

After finishing everything in Adobe Illustrator, then I proceed to make the GIF in Photoshop. I animated the bunny rocket, the sparks behind the rocket, the bigger stars, and the logline. I was thinking to animate the clouds too, but in the end, I thought it will be a little "too much".

Fig 2.15, Process of making the GIF (15/10/2021)

I'm struggling to make the sparks move smoother, I did my best to make it looks smoother, but it did not turn out really well.

Anyways, here are the finals:

FEEDBACKS

Remember it has to be decisive and minimalist and make more attempts to choose the better one.

REFLECTIONS

I don't really have confidence in this, because when I saw Miss Jennifer did the example in class and it looks so good, I was afraid that I can't do this. After I tried and did researches on the internet, I'm glad that I actually did it, even though it does not look as good as others, but I actually did it! It is quite challenging and fun that you can try out everything and play with it.
