LECTURES

Lecture 7
Sense of Place (The Importance of Observation)
Ms. Jinchi starts the lecture with an introduction:
  • In the simplest description, a designer's role is to solve problems with effective visual communication.
  • "Problems'' that a designer solve are aplenty- ranging from personal goals to community events, and from corporate functions to world-changing projects, all through creative, visual communication means.

The Importance of Observation
  • Being observant means to be attentive to your surroundings, to pay attention to the details, and to be analytical about them.
  • For a designer, observation can be an effective way to get ideas. Sources of observation can stem from artifacts, daily happenings, or physical surroundings.
  • Observing is an active act of acquiring information, through the senses, of a subject matter in its natural setting.
  • Our senses are important for us to know, feel, understand, analyse, and even plan what we want to do.

Sense of Place

  • As shown in example of Island Bazaar, we can get the hint of an island life, the cool breeze of the air, the warmth of the sun all through careful observation and documentation of the designer's surroundings.
  • You will observe that suitable design principles are applied to create effective visuals in those Instagram feeds of Island Bazaar.
Ms. Jinchi gave us a direction before we start to create something using the sense of place:
  1. Think about the place you are in now or a place you had spent some time at previously.
  2. How do you express your sense of that place?
  3. Start by documenting your observations (photographs, diary, talking to relevant people)
  4. Create a mindmap.

INSTRUCTIONS

1. Upload your design for Sense of Place
2. Make sure you also have:
a) recap of the lecture on Sense of Place
b) visual research
c) idea exploration with brief descriptions
d) feedback from lecturer
e) final design outcome (pictures must neatly cropped and must not be shadowy/blur) with brief rationale
f) brief reflection for the week

VISUAL RESEARCH
I found some pictures on Google and Pinterest:
This painting is by Clare Finn, the place is in Liverpool.

I like these two artworks that I found on Pinterest, it has a clean look and colour, it makes people felt relaxed while watching it.

This artwork is quite interesting because it has a frame in it like he or she look out the window.

IDEA EXPLORATION

I wanted to create something about my working place because I worked there almost for a year. It is a beverage shop and the reason I wanted to use it in the project is that I have a lot of happy memories there, including my friends that I know there and even though working is tiring but we all felt happy every day when we are all together.
This is the sketch of the storeroom because most of the time we are all here resting, eating, and even sleeping. So, it is a meaningful and memorable place for me. The storeroom has a lot of boxes and materials for making the drinks.

Then, I start my work in Adobe Illustrator. I added texture to the ceiling and the floor to make it more realistic.

Here I'm trying to choose which to use, the left one is more obvious with the drink in it, but the right one is more like it is in the bottle, so I thought that the right one would be more realistic so I chose the right one.

Then, I added a timer and a kitchen thermometer that we actually used to boil the tea.

Then, here's my final result :

REFLECTION
In this project, I was struggling that I have no idea at first, but after that, I came up with an idea of my workplace. I had a lot of memory there, from MCO till now. During MCO, I'm still working and at that time, the place I go was just my workplace and my home. I'm grateful that even though me and my friends there just known each other not more than one year, but how we treat each other is like we have known each other for more than a year.

Anyways, I learned to explore ideas more in this project, and I used the one-point perspective in this project, and I think it turned out quite ok but I'm not satisfied with that, because my skill is not enough to make it better, I will learn more and try better in the future, hopefully I can do well in my final project.
