LECTURES
Lecture 6
Self-portrait
In the lecture video, Ms. Jinchi taught us about self-portrait. How we see ourselves is different from how others see us by our physical traits and personality.

Ms. Jinchi also showed us a video about people answering the question, "what is a self-portrait?''

Self-portrait is a self-representation in the form of a drawing/ painting/ sculpture/ design. It is a visual depiction of the self.
A self-portrait artwork represents the designer/ artist, in other words, how he sees himself, what he's feeling, and how he wants to be seen by others. It is not necessarily about creating a realistic image of yourself. Instead, it's often an exercise in self-exploration.

Ms. Jinchi mentioned that making a mindmap is useful for us to discover more of ourselves.

In the video, we can also see some examples of self-portrait :

VISUAL RESEARCH

First, I searched on the internet for "self-portrait" for more references, here are some of them:
I like how they draw their
"self-portrait" by not just drawing their faces but with other elements.

And this self-portrait is more like a cartoon style, it is drawn by Sam Skinner, using Tim Burtons's goofy gothic style to draw her self-portrait.

IDEA EXPLORATION

So at first, I start with a very simple sketch to make sure what I wanted to draw,

Fig 2.5, Sketch

I was inspired by the short film called "Paperman" produced by Walt Disney Animation Studios and directed by John Kahrs. What I wanted to express is not like the short film but the title — Paperman. What I thought when I saw the title is paperman that are man cut out from paper.

I want to express that Im like a paperman, can be easily destroyed by water or scissor. In the process of me growing up, there are a lot of challenges and difficulties. I need umbrellas to help me get through these challenges but it seems like the journey of growing up is a very long journey, I need to keep changing umbrellas to keep myself safe from the rain. But at the same time, I saw others are doing well and starting to get to the bright side even though I keep changing umbrellas but Im still at the beginning, and as a paperman, I'm starting to “melt” like a water-soluble paper.

  • Balance - Paperman (symmetry)
  • Contrast - Red umbrellas
  • Repetition - Red umbrellas

REFLECTION

In this self-portrait project, actually, I wanted to go for a simple self-portrait that we can see online. But I wanted to try something different to express what Im thinking. Like Dr. Charles said something like drawing can really express our feelings, it really does, and it is a way to express our emotions. I learned a lot from Dr. Charles's class. On the other hand, I believe I can do it better in the future.
